Question
A luggage handler pulls a 20kg suitcase up a smooth ramp inclined at 30 degrees about the horizontal by applying a constant force, P magnitude 100 N, parallel to the incline. The luggage ends up moving the suitcase, whick is at rest initially, 5m up the incline.
a. Calculate the work done by the luggage handler on the suitcase.
b.Calculate the work done by the Normal force from the ramp on the suitcase.
c.Calculate the work done by the gravitional force on the suitcase.
d. Calculate the net work done on the suit case.
e. Calculatethe final speed of the suitcase. (Using Wnet =deltaKE)
Explanation / Answer
a) work done by the luggage handler on the suitcase
W = F.d = (100)(5) = 500 J
b) work done by the Normal force from the ramp on the suitcase
W = 0
c) work done by the gravitional force on the suitcase
W = m g L sin 30 = (20)(9.8)(5) sin 30 = 490N
d) net work done is
W = 500 + 490 = 990 N
e) final speed using work energ theorem
(1/2)mv^2 = 990
(1/2)(20)v^2 = 990
v = 9.95m/s
