Question
Britney Tos 985 Cell Transport Review Worksheet Complete the table by checking the correct column for each statement: Statement Isotonic solutionHypotonic solution Hypertonic solution Causes a cell to swell Doesn't change the shape of a cell Causes osmosis Causes a cell to shrink Match the term with its correct description: a. energy b. facilitated diffusion c. endocytosis d. passive transport e. active transport f. exocytosis g. channel protein Transport protein that provides a tube-like opening in the plasma membrane through which particles can diffuse Is used during active transport but not passive transport Process by which a cell takes in material by forming a vesicle around it Particle movement from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration Process by which a cell expels wastes A form of passive transport that uses transport proteins Particle movement from an area of lower concentration to an area of higher concentration Match the term with its correct description: a. transport protein b. active transport c. diffusion d. passive transport e. osmosis xocytosis g.e h. equilibrium f. endocytosis The diffusion of water through a cell membrane The movement of substances through the cell membrane without the use of cellular energy Used to help substances enter or exit the cell membrane When energy is required to move materials through a cell membrane When the molecules of one substance are spread evenly throughout another substance to vesicle membrane fuses (becomes a part of) the cell membrane and the contents are released become balanced The cell membrane forms around another substance, for example, how the amoeba gets its food When molecules move from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration
Explanation / Answer
1.a) Causes a cell to swell - Hypotonic solution
In Hypotonic solution the extracellular fluid has lower osmolarity than the fluid inside the cell. When the cells are in hypotonic solution, water will rush into the cell through osmosis which fills the cell and so the cells swell.
b) Does not change the shape of a cell - Isotonic solution
In Isotonic solution, the extracellular fluid has same osmolarity of the cell so the flow of water in and out of the cell happens at the same rate. Thus, the shape of a cell doesnt change.
C) Causes osmosis - Hypotonic solution and Hypertonic solution
Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules across a semipermeable membrane from a higher concentration to a lower concentration. Water molecules move into or out of the cells until both solution are in isotonic.
D) Causes a cell to shrink - Hypertonic solution
In hypertonic solution the concentration of solutes is greater in the extra cellular fluid than that of cell cytoplasm. So the water move out of the cell through osmosis to a region of higher solute concentration. So the cells shrink.
