Do you guys know how to these problems. I turned them in on Thursday, and the professor told me that they were wrong.
An 18.0 m long uniform beam with a mass of 40.0 kg is supported by two vertical columns as shown. If an 80.0 kg person stands 6.00 m from the left end find the force of each column on the beam. -14.0 m- -14.0m A 6.00 m long uniform strut with a mass of 25.0 kg is attached to a wall as shown in the figure. A horizontal cable makes a 20° angle with respect to the strut and holds the strut in place. Find the tension in the cable 20°Explanation / Answer
Let FL and FR are the forces exerted by left and right column on the beam.
As te beam is in equilibrium, net force and net torque acting on beam must be zero.
Apply, Net torque about left column = 0
FR*14 - 40*9.8*9 - 80*9.8*6 = 0
FR = (40*9.8*9 + 80*9.8*6)/14
= 588 N <<<<<<----------------Answer
Apply, Net torque about right column = 0
-FL*14 + 40*9.8*5 + 80*9.8*8 = 0
FL = (40*9.8*5 + 80*9.8*8)/14
= 588 N <<<<<<----------------Answer
