Question
A uniform form beam of length 1.2 m and mass 5.0 kg rest on two supports as shown above. A second uniform beam of length 0.60 m and mass 2.5 kg lays on top of the first beam. The force on the beam from the left support is N, and the force from the right support is N.
I have been having trouble loading the image so if it doesn't then the two supports are at the far ends of the 1.2m beam. The 0.6 m beam is laying on top of the larger one on the left side so that the smaller beam lays entirely on the larger one extending out to the middle of the larger beam
Explanation / Answer
W1 = mg = 2.5kg second beam
W[beam] = weight of beam
L = 1.2 meters
x = 0.6 meters from left end
F1 = force pushing up at left stand
F2 = force pushing up at right stand
W1 + W[beam] * L/2 = F2 *L
F1 + F2 = W1 + W[beam]
W1 =m1g = 2.5kg * 9.8 m/s^2 = 24.5 N
W[beam] = 5 kg * 9.8 m/s^2 = 49 N
24.5N + 49N * 1.2m / 2 = F2 * 1.2m
F2 = 44.91 N = force pushing up at right stand
F1 + 44.91N = 24.5 N + 49 N
F1 = 28.59 N = force pushing up at left stand
