these on the exam. Possible Essay Questions for Exam 1. There will be three of these Question 1. multiple types of data to make inferences These types of data include fossils, developmental patterns, and phylogenies. Each data type alone has limitations (Gie. researchers have to make assumptions to use them) and so the Biologists studying the evolution of vertebrates and their innovations combine about the origins and early purposes of these traits. A. Describe the limitations of and/or the assumptions that are made to use each type of data. Fossils: Developmental patterns Phylogenies: B. What would you look for in studies on vertebrate evolution to be more confident in their conclusions than others. Explain why this characteristic would increase your confidence.

Explanation / Answer

Fossils: The limitations or disadvatage of fossils in evolution are as follows:

1)Area of habitat of particular species

For example the formation of fossils are faster in lowland habits.

2)Movement of tectonic plates

The movement of tectonic plates leads to destruction fossils due to which they cannot be recovered in the futrue.

3)Based on species

The fossils of fishes can be found fastly than other taxons.

Developmental patterns: The development pattern studies help us to understand the physiological and anatomical modification that a cell undergo in particular species in particular period of life. The development pattern deals maily on the genotype and its expression in the form of phenotype.

The disadvantage are as follows:

1)Depends on the climate of particular area:

Same species that evolved in different part of the world would face different climate that leads to different adaptation in the same species in different region. This is the problem that make it difficult in analyse the same species n different regions of the world.

2)Based on the genes that are expressed in a species

The genes in a particular species may expressed in various stages and it may lead into different morphological characters that makes it difficult to identify.

3)Mutation

Sudden change in genes make the species identification difficult and its morphological character changes.

Phylogenies: It explain how closely the orgainism are related with each other.

The disadvantage in Phylogeny are:

1)The species that share common morphological characters may not be belongs to same group

2)Homology and anology may not be considered while using the phylogeny.

In vertebrate evolution we cannot depend on a single character to determine the species as there are some common characters that share different phenotypes in various species and this lead to the defining difference between the species.
