Question
A rescue plane flies horizontally above the sea at constant speed searching for lost boat.when the plane is exactly above the boat the pilot hears the sound of huge loud horn of the lost boat. The crew of the lost boat started the sound signal before the airplane was above the boat at a distance twice as much as the altitude of airplane. Assuming that it takes the sound 2.5 s to reach the plane calculate a) the speed of the plane b)the altitude
if answer is handwriten please scan and upload ,don not upload pic , thank you
Explanation / Answer
The speed of the sound = 340.29 m/s and it takes 2.5s in travelling h distance vertically such that in the same time the plane travells twice of h distance horizontally.
So the vertical distance h = 340.29*2.5 = 100.725 m.
So the horizontal displacement = 2*100.725 = 201.45 m.
and as above said the time taken by the plane in tavelling in this much distance will be equal to same as 2.5 s
so the velocity of place will be 201.45/2.5 = 80.58 m/s
So the altitude is 100.725 m and the speed is 80.58 m/s.
