Question

2 Consider the circuit below with 8 resistors. a. If the switch is open calculate the total resistance of the circuit. b. In the instance that the switch is open calculate the total current in the circuit. c. 1f the switch is open calculate the total power in the circuit. d. If the switch s closed calculate the total resistance of the circuit. e. In the instance that the switch s closed calculate the total current in the circuit. f. If the switch is closed calculate the total power in the circuit.

Explanation / Answer

when the circuit is open

65, 100 and 25 ohm resistors are in series so,

net resistance = 65 + 100 + 25

net resistance = 190 ohm

by ohm's law

V = IR

50 = I * 190

current I = 0.2631 A

power = I^2 * R

power = 0.2631^2 * 190

power = 13.1521 W

when circuit is closed

15 and 30 ohm resistances are in series so,

R1 = 15 + 30

R1 = 45 ohm

40 and 80 ohm resistances are in series so,

R2 = 40 + 80

R2 = 120 ohm

R2 and 65 ohm resistances are in parallel so,

1 / R3 = 1 / R2 + 1 / 65

1 / R3 = 1 / 120 + 1 / 65

R3 = 42.162 ohm

R3 and R1 are in series so,

R4 = 42.162 + 45

R4 = 87.162 ohm

100 and 25 ohm are in series so

R5 = 100 + 25

R5 = 125 ohm

R5 and R4 are in parallel

1 / R6 = 1 / 125 + 1 / 87.162

R6 = 51.353 ohm

R6 and 65 ohm resistor are in series so,

R = 51.353 + 65

net resistance R = 116.353 ohm

current = 50 / 116.353

current = 0.4297 A

power = 0.4297^2 * 116.353

power = 21.483 W
