Question

a) What is the speed of the stone when it reaches point B? b) How far did the stone travel on the rough horizontal ground before it ran into the spring? Please provide step by step and diagram! Thank you 7. (20 pts) A 15.0-kg stone slides down a snow-covered A hill leaving point A with a speed of 9.00 m/s. There is no friction on the hill between points A and B, but there is friction on the level ground at the bottom of the hill, between B and the wall. After travelling along the rough horizontal ground, the stone runs into a very long, light spring with force constant 2.00 N/m. The stone compresses the spring to 15.5 m from its equilibrium position before coming to rest momentarily. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the stone and the horizontal ground is 0.20, 20 m (a) What is the speed of the stone when it reaches point B? (b) How far did the stone travel on the rough horizontal ground before it ran into the spring? nd nd e) Vat poin f 7

Explanation / Answer

Here ,

a) let the speed of stone at B is v

inital velocity at A , u = 9 m/s

Using conservation of energy

0.5 * m * v^2 = 0.5 * m * u^2 + m* g* h

0.5 * 15 * v^2 = 0.5 * 15 * 9^2 + 15 * 9.8 * 20

solving for v

v = 21.7 n.s

the velocity at point B is 21.7 m/s

b)

let the distance is d

Using conservation of energy

0.5 * 15 * 21.7^2 = 0.5 * 2 * 15.5^2 + 0.2 * 15 * 9.8 * d

solvng for d

d = 112 m

the distance travelled by the block on rough surface is 112 m
