Question

Rank the magnetic fields. Explain your reasoning. Which are equal?

Eight parts of electromagnets are shown below. The current in the left electromagnet is 1A and the current in the right is 2A in each case. They are also separated by the same distance, as they have the same length and diameter. Carefully observe the orientation of the soil and the direction of current flow. Rank the magnetic fields at the midpoints between the electromagnets from the largest to the smallest. (Direction to the right is positive, and -5

Explanation / Answer

Magnetic field due to a solenoid is given by B = µ0 n I

So, since the dimensions are same, B is directly proportional to n and I .

Taking µ0 as 1 (just for convenience in comparing), B = nI or, for now, NI (taking length L as 1, doesn't matter since the length is same for all and we just need to compare.)

The direction is given by the right- hand rule

A:

mag field at centre = 5x1 (right) - 5 x 2 (left) = - 5 (left )

B:

mag field at centre = 3x1 (right) + 3 x 2 (right) = 9 (right )

C:

mag field at centre = - 5x1 (left) - 5 x 2 (left) = - 15 (left )

D:

mag field at centre = - 3x1 (left) + 3 x 2 (right) = 3 (right )

E:

mag field at centre = 5x1 (right) + 5 x 2 (right) = 15 (right )

F:

mag field at centre = - 5x1 (left) + 5 x 2 (right) = 5 (right )

G:

mag field at centre = - 3x1 (left) - 3 x 2 (left) = - 9 (left )

H:

mag field at centre = 3x1 (right) - 3 x 2 (left) = - 3 (left )

E has the highest value (15) and C has the least (-15) and the rest of the ranking is as follows:

E > B > F > D > H > A > G > C
