Question
C. elegans is a nematode that is an excellent model system to probe protein function during early development. Inactivation of the C. elegans lis-1 gene results in a defect in the position of nuclei in certain neuronal cells during development.
If you wanted to ask whether lis-1 was interacting in cooperation with dynein, what result might you expect to see in animals with inactivated dynein?
If you had fluorescently labeled lis-1 and dynein proteins, where would you expect to find them in the animal?
Explanation / Answer
Dynein proteins serve to regulate the retrograde transport. Dynein protein moves along the microtuble in cells and serve to transport the organelles in the cells. The same activity is responsible for reorganization of chromosomes during cell division. If Lis-1 gene serve in coperation with dynein protein, inactivated dynein would cause abnormal chromosomal distribution among the daughter cells. Lis -1 and dynein proteins are supposed to be present in kinetochore of the chromosomes
