Biology 115 Exam 1 1. Assume that the ability for a fly to detect UV light is determined by an allele pt, which to an allele p, which results in a failure to sense UV light. These alleles effect pattern of inheritance. A homozygous recessive male mates What are the phenotypes and proportions of animals with each these phenotypes in the F generation? matemal female 2. What is the simplest model organism with the shortest generation time in which one could study nervous system function? 3. The father of a certain family has the blood type M and the mother has the blood type N. The mother has one child from a previous marriage, the mother and father have one (genetic) child together, and they adopt another child to complete their family. Their three children are tested for their blood types: they are M, MN, and N. Given all of this information, what is the blood type of the child who is adopted? 4. In graduate school, you study genes involved in cancer. In the strain of mice that you study, each mouse usually gets one tumor within the first year. You isolate two mutations: a mutation in gene T that leads to formation of no tumors, and a mutation in gene G that leads to multiple tumors. You generate double-mutants and find that they have no tumors. If the genes act in a signaling pathiway, which gene is likely epistatic, and which gene likely functions downstream? Answer in The genetic model organism with the shortest generation time is: You are studying a biosynthetic pathway. You find that enzyme A converts the starting compound 5. 6. into the first intermediate. The first intermediate is converted into the second intermediate by enzyme B. The second intermediate is converted into the product by enzyme C. You make loss-of-function mutations in the genes encoding each of the enzymes. What will the phenotype be if a double-mutant is made between the genes encoding enzyme A and enzyme C? a. Build-up of the starting compound b. Build-up of the first intermediate c. Build-up of the second intermediate d. Production of the product e. None of the above. You are studying a genetic disorder and establish the following pedigree. What form of inheritance is most likely in this pedigree? 7. a. Autosomal recessive b. X-linked recessive c. Autosomal dominant d. Cytoplasmic inheritanceExplanation / Answer
1) The ability to sense UV light is determined by the presence of p+ allele which is dominant over p allele which results in failure to sense light. The allele follows maternal inheritance.
Homozygous recessive male (pp) is mated with heterozygous female (p+p). Half of the F1 generation will have the ability to sense UV light with the genotype (p+p) and the other half doesnt sense UV light. This is because, the offsprings will inherit only the maternal gene.
