Part E: Brain exercises 45. Draw a line from box A to A, another from B to B, and a third from C to C, such that your lines do not touch or cross each other, nor touch or cross any other line. They may be as "curvy" as you like, but must stay entirely within the large rectangle.) 46. Of three sisters, two are married, two are blond, and two are nuclear physicists. The one who is not blond is not a naclear physicist, and the one who is not a nuclear physicist is single. How many, if any, of the sisters are blond, married physicists? 47. Confucius, the great Chinese philosopher, has baked a cake in the shape of the ancient yin-yang symbol of opposing cosmic forces. One half is chocolate-flavored, and one half is vanilla. He cuts the cake down the curvy line separating chocolate and vanilla halves. Four children then arrive, and they each want a piece of the cake. They insist that each of their pieces must be the same size and shape as all of the other pieces Also, two of the children prefer chocolate and two prefer vanilla, and they all want frosting, which is only on the top of the cake. Confucius tells them that if they can cut each of the two existing pieces into two identical halves with a vertical cut (ie. not through the side of the cake, which wouldn't divide the frosting equally), then they can have the cake. Help the hungry children. Draw the cut that divides the two pieces into four pieces with identical size and shape 48. A man walks slowly and steadily along a trail which leads to the top of a tall mountain. He begins at 5 AM, and reaches He makes it to the bottom at 5 PM. Is there any place on the trail that the man passes at exactly the the top at 5 PM. The next morning at 5 AM, he begins walking down the same trail, this time leisurely, stopping often to same time on both days? Explain your reasoning

Explanation / Answer

[48] The monk starts his way down at the same time as he starts climbing upwards at sunrise. let us suppose that there are two monks and both starts their way where one starts climbing upwards towards the top of the mountain and the other one starts descending down from the top of the mountain. since there is only one path to the mountain, both of them will surely meet each other at some point of path and at some certain time of day. Hence this proves that the way up and the way down whwn started at 5 am {during sunrise} both of them have a point along the path which the monk passes at precisely at some time on both days.

46 The one who is not a nuclear physicist is neither blond nor married. Hence each of the other two sister is blond married nuclear physicist.
