Question
How do you feel about the impact of humans on fish populations?
Do you feel that Dave's experimental evidence could be shown in larger populations?
Do you think we should just stop fishing?
What are some ways in which we currently manage fish stocks in the North Atlantic?
How do you think we could manage a fish stock like bluefish, that migrate from South America to Canada?
What is another solution to the proposed problem of smaller fish? What are the advantages and disadvantages to that solution?
Do you need further evidence to support that humans are impacting fish size? Why? Why not?
Explain how human selection on fish is impacting fecundity.
What are the requirements for selection (any type)? How does fecundity impact the ability of fish populations to meet these requirements?
Explanation / Answer
1. Along with the increase in the human growth, development in new technology etc.,. the impacts on the Marine Environments have also increased. Overfishing and introduction of new species and pollution is leading to the decrease in the life under water. Due to this over fishing and several other human related activities, there will be disturbances in the food web by targeting specific, in demand species which creates imbalance in the Enviroment and Ecosystem.
2. According to me, the experimental evidence should be presented in larger populations because to get the clear view of incentive effects of species on a population. this can give information in larger view.
3. According to me stopping fishing is not the soultion for the imbalance created in the Ecosystem. Stopping overfishing can change the situation to some extent. If we stop fishing then the load in the ocean with in time period will increase and of course there will be a tough competition for the survival and ultimately leads to the food scarcity and even disturb the food web. This creates also a problem and complicated too.
4. Sustainable fishing is one of most used method to manage stock in the North atlantic. Substainable fishing means it should target on fish and result in very little by catch. Rod and Reel method is considered more sustainable for commercial fishers than the bycatch method. Strong rules and regulations should be made and are much needed to be kept in practice.
5. According to me, Fish needs healthy place to live, feed and reproduce. They need healthy relations to migrate from one place to another place. They are certain reasons for the fishes to migrate like habitat loss, , flow alteration and introduction of new species and overexploitation. So if all these are prevented or managed and if we artificially create a media or conditions for the fish that are suitable to reproduce then these migrations can be prevented.
6. By- actch is the major issue in smaller fish problem, the proposed solution is to restore fish stocks so over a period of time we can see a good number of our favorite fish and even marine livelihood would be better. by this we can get back the marine ecosystem balence. This also have disavantages like Money, time and pollution etc.,
7. Human imapact the fish size because as Fishing increases the size and age of the fish caught decline which also leads to the disturbance in the ecosystem.
8. Human selection of fish = (i)Eyes - moist, bright and rounded (ii) Gills- they should be clean, red and shinny. (iii) skin - it should be moist to touch, shiny and coloring should not be dull. (iv) Smell - the smell should be fresh not fishy. Due to this selection the fecundity has several impacts like alteration in the spawning period, may be extinction of the fishes only in certain area, disturbance in food web, Scarcity of food etc.
9. The Major requirement for the fecundity selection is the seasonal spawning potential and Egg diameter and Fish size specially the female. The have adverse effects on the fish popultion because as the selection is based on the estimating the reproductive potential of the species, the changes in the growth and condition patterns were altered. Due to this, food scarcity and regional growth differences may occur.
