Essay Questions (3-5 pages)
1. Describe two human–plant interactions that cause global warming. Describe two human–plant interactions that could reverse global warming. Discuss how one scenario may be a stronger influence.
2. Ash (Fraxinus) flowers are small and green and hardly apparent to the human eye. In contrast, Datura wrightii are large and showy with fused petals forming a tube. Explain the adaptive advantages of each of these types of flowers and whether one has a better adaptation or not.
3. Do heterotrophs or autotrophs benefit more from the existence of the other?
Explanation / Answer
#1.
Global warming is an alarming situation in the present scenario causing changing the climate of our planet Earth turning up into a warmer place. The climate system of earth is warming being humans the dominant cause behind it. Human activities causing emission of greenhouse gases viz., carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide years over years is the major cause for climate change. The anthropological activities involving deforestation, burning of fossil fuels, manufacturing of industrial goods and etc., have led to this drastic increase in the Earth’s temperature inviting many undesirable inconveniences to the dwellers of this planet. Plants being savior of other heterotrophic living organism in diverse ways. Specially, humans are benefitted by the plants in numerous ways beginning from elementary food source to providing shelter and even have become a major source for making money. This luring aspects of plants brings in over exploitation of plants by humans. Deforestation being the major cause for global warming affects Earth’s health adversely. Recklessly, cutting down the trees and burning of fossil fuels emitting carbon dioxide comprises major share of the human activities contributed for global warming.
They fix the environmental carbon dioxide into a very desirable product, oxygen. In addition, they also reduce the overall temperature off Earth by evapotranspiration. The evaporation of water cools down the plants i.e., perspiration in case of humans and simultaneously the transpirated water is released into the earth’s atmosphere cooling down Earth as well.
Uprooting this significant creatures by humans might satisfy the financial needs but it has an overall negative impact on humans itself. This reduces the efficacy of carbon dioxide fixation and causes alterations in net carbon dioxide concentration in atmosphere. Also, when the concentration of carbon dioxide hits beyond the threshold it causes shrinking of the tiny pores of leaves disabling them to transpire. Cumulative reduction in transpiration process gradually causes elevation of earth’s temperature leading to global warming.
These harming activities could be refrained to reverse the alarming climate change scenario of earth. In order to mitigate, humans must adopt afforestation and use sustainable renewable sources of energy to fulfill their daily needs. This will minimize the emission of greenhouse gases and reduce human dependency on fossil fules.
Both the actions are strong enough to tackle the global climate change. Comparatively, planting trees and prevent their destruction are the paramount solutions to this burning cause.
