Question

A less of focal length f = 15.0 mm is used as a magnifier. If maximum magnification is desired, where should the object be placed relative to the lens? What is this magnification? Is the objective lens or the eyepiece lens in a microscope used as a magnifier? Assume a near point of 25 cm. You have a trainable monkey that can turn a crank on a generator to produce a maximum voltage V = 170 V, comparable with the US electric power system. You have a large horse-shoe magnet for which B = 0.50 T and a coil of area A = 0.0350 m^2. The coil has 26 turns of wire. At what frequency must the monkey rotate the coil in the magnetic field? An electro-magnetic wave has a wavelength of 800 nm. Determine the frequency for the wave. Is the wave part of the infrared, visible, or ultraviolet part of the electromagnetic spectrum? Is an electro-magnetic wave a transverse or a longitudinal wave? The light emitted by a helium-neon laser has a wavelength Lambda = 632.8 nm in air. Calculate the wavelength for this light in zircon which has an index of refraction n = 1.923. If the laser been strikes the face of zircon at an angle Theta = 23.0 Degree relative to the normal, what is the refracted angle inside the zircon? A diffraction grating has 450 lines per mm. Light of wavelength Lambda = 432 nm is incident on the grating. Determine the diffraction angles for this light in the first and second orders. If a viewing screen is located 1.30 m away from the grating plane, calculate the distance from the central maximum to the first order line. How many orders are possible for this wavelength?

Explanation / Answer

6) f = focal length = 15mm

= 15*0.1 = 1.5 cm

u = object distance = ?

v = image distance

m = magnification = ?

d = near point or least distance of distinct vision = 25 cm

for magnifier , m = ( 1 + d/ f)

= ( 1 + 25 / 1.5)

m = 17.66

also m = v/u

17.66 = v/u

v = 17.66 u

from 1/f = 1/ v - 1/u

1/ 1.5 = 1/ 17.66 u - 1/u

on solving , u = - 1.41 cm

object distance = 1.41 cm
