Question
1) You and a friend were in a minor bike accident - fell off your tandem bicycle - and you are taking drugs to try and relieve your pain and swollen toes. Your friend takes Ibuprofen and you take acetaminophen to treat your symptoms. Though both of you feel in less pain you could swear that your swelling is not going down as much as your friend's has. Explain why you see this difference given the targets of NSAIDs vs acetaminophen. 2) You are examining two neurons that synapse on a third neuron. When you excite the first of the two neurons the third neuron fires. When you excite the second of the twu neurons you do not see the third neuron firing. You suspect that the second neuron produces a neuromodulator. What could you do to demonstrate this? 3) You have discovered a certain compound - Sucker- is produced by people who cannot resist feeding cats. Cats are capable of sensing and are attracted by the Sucker compound. What kind of secretion is Sucker? 4a) Wnt signaling is involved in patterning in many tissue types where cells at the edge of the tissue will produce wnt and as the wnt ligand diffuses across the tissue different cell types are specified depending on the concentration of wnt. You are examining such a patterned tissue and notice that cells that produce wnt are also receiving the wnt signal. This is an example of what type of secretion? 4b) The patterning of the nearby cells is an example of what type of secretion?Explanation / Answer
Ibuprofen belongs to a class of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Ibuprofen blocks the enzyme that makes prostaglandins (cyclooxygenase), resulting in lower levels of prostaglandins. Ibufren along with reducing the pain, swelling, fever and inflammation too.
Acetaminophen belongs to a class of drugs called analgesics and antipyretics. This drug reduces the formation of prostaglandins in the brain. Prostaglandins are responsible for pain, swelling and inflammation. Acetaminophen relieves pain by elevating the pain threshold i.e it increases the level of pain which a person experiences to suffer. The major difference between the two medications is ibuprofen acts as an anti-inflammatory drug, which means it reduces inflammation and swelling whereas acetaminophen does not reduce the inflammation to an extent that ibrufen does.
