Question
A) Does the box start moving? if so, find its rate of acceleration. What is the friction force vector (magnitude and direction)?
At a different time, the box is sliding to the north on the same surface. While it is still moving, you start pushing it toward the north with increasing force until reaching F = 84 N, then maintaining that force.
B) What is the friction force vector (magnitude and direction) after reaching 84 N? What is the box's rate of accleration?
Free-body diagrams would be so, so appreciated. Thanks! :-)
Explanation / Answer
here,
mass , m = 20 kg
us = 0.5
uk = 0.35
F = 84 N
a)
static friction force , ffs = us * m * g
ffs = 98 N
as the applied force is less than the magnitude of the static frictional force
then the block will not move
the rate of accelration is zero
the frictional force acting is equal to the applied force
frictional force is 84 N towards south
b)
the friction force vector is 84 N towards south
