Question

patient comes in describing hand pain and says that he injured his hand when playing football. You decide to use screen-film radiography to take an x-ray of the hand, suspecting a hairline fracture.

Describe ideal x-ray setting including: intensifying-screen thickness, film speed, cathode filament size, and object-detector distance. Only use the words: large, small, fast, slow, close or far to express your decision with a couple words describing the consequences. Briefly summarize your overall logic by each decision

Explanation / Answer

intensifying-screen thickness -   are thin sheets, or layers, of fluorescent materials . Film is much more sensitive to light than to x-radiation . Intensifying screens introduce blurring into the imaging process and places a limit on the visibility of detail

film speed    - the faster the film, the less exposure it needs. Film speed can be an important aspect in determining the amount of radiation exposure received by a patient. The greater the film speed, the lesser the exposure received by the patient.

cathode filament size - The cathode generally consists of a small coil of wire, called a filament, mounted in a focusing cup. Electrons are boiled off the filament by applying an electric current so that it becomes white hot - the process is called Thermionic Emission.

object-detector distance   - The object to detector distance is usually kept as small as possible to help minimize unsharpness.
