Question
Two insulated wires perpendicular to each other in the same plane carry currents as shown in (Figure 1) . Assume that I = 14 A and d = 13 cm .
Part A Find the magnitude of the net magnetic field these wires produce at point P if the 10 A current is to the right. Express your answer in teslas to two significant figures. BP = m T
Part B Find the magnitude of the net magnetic field these wires produce at point Q if the 10 A current is to the right. Express your answer in teslas to two significant figures. BQ = m T
Part C Find the magnitude of the net magnetic field these wires produce at point P if the 10 A current is to the left. Express your answer in teslas to two significant figures. BP = m T
Part D Find the magnitude of the net magnetic field these wires produce at point Q if the 10 A current is to the left. Express your answer in teslas to two significant figures.
Explanation / Answer
Using B = (mu/2pi) (I/r)
(2 x 10^-7) 14/.13 = 2.15 x 10^-5 T
and
(2 x 10^-7) 10/.08 = 2.50 x 10^-5
Adding for (a)and (b)to get 4.65 x 10^-5 (both fields out of the page)
Subtracting for (c) and (d) to get 3.5 x 10^-6 (stronger field into page)
