Evolution Help: Phylogeny
The figure below shows a phylogeny for several genera of tardigrades. Batillipes O Clavarctus Parmursa O Orzicliscus O Plecola Zioella O Based on the phylogeny, which of the following statements is true? O Batilipes, Clavarctus and Parmursa are a polyphyletic group. O Orzcliscus, Pleocola, and Zioella are a paraphyletic group Anisonychus, Parmursa and Zioella are a monophyletic group. O Anisonychus, Batilipes, and Parmursa are a paraphyletic group O Parmursa, Orzicliscus and Zioella are a monophyletic groupExplanation / Answer
1. In our first question, from the phylogeny we conclude that ,right answer is option c-"carnivory is a symplesiomorphy for Anisonychus and Parmursa".Because plesiomorphic character means ancestral character and we have seen on question that ancestor feed on plants. So there is no possiblity for carnivory define as a plesiomorphic character but apomorphic character.
2.Answer is three evolutionary transitions (feeding mode) occurred because from ancestor (F) feed on plants to (E) as permursa had carnivory feeding mode.Next transitions on Clavaractus because they have harbivory feeding mode although their recent ancestors had not .Next transitions on Plecola because they have carnivory feeding mode but their ancestors was herbivores.
