Question
Everything old is new again, in this instance bed bug problems! In graduate school (1980s) I was told that bed bugs had mostly disappeared as a pest because central heating made human dwellings less favorable (maybe by increasing egg mortality?). However, the re-appearance of bed bugs as a major urban pest problem (2000s) suggests that this explanation wasn’t true. What selection pressures do you think are most important for an organism to evolve to live with humans, and how might an organism (like bed bugs) adapt to these pressures?
Explanation / Answer
All the adaptations of the Bedbug can be seen to be products of a symbolic relationship with human beings, with the bedbug being the creation of human beings.Every creature which exists today evolves from a creature with no longer exists. The evolutionary process begins with a loss of stability and caused by a loss of equllibrium. In period of instability, the old forms co exists with new. The evolutionary process ends with a return to equilibrium, after which the new life form become stable and entres into a steady state. This process complete when the old transitional forms disappeared.
