Sophia knows that the surgeon will want to take cultures of the wound. 1) What will a wound culture tell the surgeon? 2) What will the surgeon use to culture the wound? 3) How will Mary handle the culture once the surgeon passes them to her? 4) How will the operating room team treat this infected wound during and immediately after the procedure? 5) How will the surgeon treat this wound postoperatively?

Explanation / Answer

1) A wound culture will detect the bacterial colonies in the wound if there is an infection. Also letting you know the type of bacteria that caused an infection. The microorganisms present in the wound will be cultured and evluated for the type of infection it can cause also it will give an idea about what type of treatment or antibiotic are needed agaist that particular infection.

2) live cells or tissues collected from the wound or the pus from wound can be collected to study the microorganisms present in it. Using a sterile syringe or a scalpel the sample can be collected and send for culturing.
