Sophia knows that the surgeon will want to take cultures of the wound. 1) What will a wound culture tell the surgeon? 2) What will the surgeon use to culture the wound? 3) How will Mary handle the culture once the surgeon passes them to her? 4) How will the operating room team treat this infected wound during and immediately after the procedure? 5) How will the surgeon treat this wound postoperatively?Explanation / Answer
1. A wound culture will help the surgeon to detect and identify the bacteria causing the infection to the wound and provides a guide to the treatment of a wound infection.
2. The surgeon will use a sterile swab to collect the cells or pus from the infected site.
3. Place the swab immediately into the sterile tube with medium and twist the lid closed. Avoid touching the swab on the tube opening. Ensure that the swab is in contact with the liquid medium. Place the specimen in the biohazard transport bag and send it to the lab as soon as possible.
4. Sterile aspectic precautions should be followed while doing debridement of an infected wound. After the procedure sterile dressing techniques should be followed.
5. The patient is put on antibiotics orally or intravenously. Usually antibiotics are given for six weeks. The drain should be checked regularly.
