Question
The nucleus of a hydrogen atom consists of a single proton, which we can treat as a point charge. With the electric potential equal to zero at infinity, (a) What is the electric potential in at a distance of 2.12x10-10 m from it? (b) what is the electric potential energy in eV of an electron at that distance from the porton? (c) if the electron is moved closer to the proton, does the electric potential energy increase or decrease? Please explain your work so that i may better understand the material. thank you
Explanation / Answer
a) electric potential V= kq/r = 8.98*10^9*1.602*10^-19/(2.12*10^-10) = 6.78 v
b) electric potential energy of an electron = Qe*V = -1.602*10^-19*6.78 = -10.86*10^-19 J
c) as we moved closer , distance reduces => electric potential increases so as potential energy .
