Genetics: A Conceptual Approach 6th Edition Pierce MHE/Freeman Map o by Sapling The blending inheritance theory differs from the concept of preformationism. What does the blending inheritance theory state and how is this different from preformationism? The egg and sperm contain genetic material that mixes upon conception to produce an intermediate phenotype in the offspring. O Offspring inherit all traits from one parent. O Genetic information travels from different body parts to the reproductive organs. O Offspring inherit discrete genetic information from both parents that manifests as a o Offspring develop from a miniature adult form, or homunculus, that already exists in the sperm or egg.

Explanation / Answer

* Blending inheritance theory was thought to be the guiding principle that controls the transfer of genetic information from one generation to the other during the "pre mendelism", a period before mendel's investigations, the 19th century.

* The blending inheritance states that "the progeny inherits any characteristic as the average of parent's value of that characteristic". It means inheritance of traits from two parents produce offspring with characteristics that are intermediate between those two parents.

* As an example of blending inheritance theory they pointed the production of pink coloured flowers on crossing a red coloured flower with a white coloured one which was proved later, is due to incomplete dominance after Mendel's concept using homozygosity and heterozygosity of genes. This the blending inheritance theory was disproved by mendelism.

* The concept of preformationism states that "an offspring inherits all of its traits from one parent". It seems to be somewhat same to that of Mendelian concept of inheritance with some exceptions.

For example, in case of the character tallness is concerned in a plant the Tt and TT offsprings are tall whereas tt is of dwarf variety. It is obtained when tall plant is crossed with a dwarf plant.

It is different from blending inheritance that blending inheritance uses the average characteristic of the parents wherein the preformationism uses character of only one parent.
