Question

A positive point charge released from rest will initially accelerate along a tangent to the electric field line at that point. Two infinite non-conducting plates are parallel to each other, with a distance d = 20.0 cm between them, as shown in the figure. Each plate carries a uniform charge distribution of sigma= - 8.5 muC/m^2. What is the electric field. Ep. at point P (with Px = 40.0 cm)? What is the electric field, E& at point d (in the middle point between two plates, to left plates is 10.0 cm and to right plates is also 10.0 cm).

Explanation / Answer

2. Electric field due to infinite plates = sigma / 2epsilon

Since there are two such plates , For point p, Ep = 2 X sigma /2 epsilon = -8.5 x 10-6 / 8.85 x 10-12 = -9.6 x 105 i N/C ...Hence electric field will be towards left

For point D, Since it is in the middle , Ed = sigma / 2epsilon - sigma / 2epsilon = 0
