Question

I ONLY NEED HELP WITH H3

Please explain as much as possible including answers. Thanks!

Here is an oscilloscope trace of an RC circuit. What is the time constant for - charging discharging If the resistance included in the circuit is 1000 ohms, what is the capacitance of the parallel-plate capacitor in the circuit? If, by some means, the distance between the parallel plates of the capacitor is reduced to half of what it was before, would the time constant change? If yes, then what would be the new time constant? the distance between the parallel plates is now restored to its original value. However, we want the time constant lo be the same as in H3. How can this be achieved without changing the capacitor?

Explanation / Answer

H 1)   For charging time constant = 1.25 * 10-3 sec

          For discharging time constant = 1.25 * 10-3 sec

H2)   value of capacitance =   1.25 * 10-3/1000

                                           =   1.25 micro Farad

H3)   as, time constant = RC

=> If distance b/w plates is reduced to half , time constant is doubled .

H4)   We can achieve this by inserting , a dielectric between plated of capacitor . So, capacitance would increase

and time constant would increase also .

Also, by changing the resistance which has double the previous value would also double up the time constant     value.
