Thus, she can no longer effectively type, file, or perform many of the other functions that she previously had performed and that are included in her job description. Your corporation has a very tight budget and does not have sufficient funds to pay for an additional secretary without reallocating budget items. The injured secretary has been very loyal to your corporation, and you have been very satisfied with her work and dedication. She wants to stay at her job. Moreover, she does not believe that she could find other emplovment at this time. Question: Should your corporation fire her, lay her off with compensation, or find a way to retain her? The corporation should not fire the injured secretary as she has been very loyal to the firm and the management has been very satisfied with her work and dedication. This would be an act of corporate ethics and social responsibility to retain the injured employees with the firm.She should be given some other task for which her physical disability would not be a constraint. She can do supervision or data collection and conducting a survey for which there would not be any constraint.
As in today's world it is difficult to get a loyal employee who is very dedicated and sacking her because of her physical disability is not ethical at all. So she should be retained. As per the ethical theory of Utilitarianism, the best action is one that maximizes utility. Utility can be measured by the pleasure we get by doing any action minus the suffering which it brings to any person.Thus the action of firing the secretary would bring pleasure to a small extent but the sufferings caused to the person would be very large and thus does not maximize the utility.
The rights Model also favors the same, that every person irrespective of their physical disability has got equal rights to perform the job. The management of the organization cannot discriminate the person based on his physical disability. Few organizations keep certain quota reserved for the physically challenged people and thus contribute to their responsibility towards the society.
As a result, the lady secretary should not be fired and should be retained by the company on the moral grounds. She should be assigned certain tasks for which her physical disability would not be a constraint.
