Question

A baseball is hit for a homerun in Fenway Park just barely over the Green Monster (a wall 95.0 m away from the batter). The ball's initial speed is 34.3 m/s and it is hit at a 35.0 deg angle. Assume the initial height of the ball is 1.00 m and ignore air resistance.

1.) What are the components of the initial velocity in the horizontal and vertical directions?
*I have vx = 34.3 m/s x cos(35) = 28.1 m/s and vy = 34.3 m/s x sin(35) = 19.7 m/s.* These are correct.

Now... how do I do these 2 questions?
2.) How much time does it take until the ball is just over the wall after being hit?

3.) What is the height of the wall?

Explanation / Answer

horizontal initial velocity = 28.1 m/s

vertical initial velocity = 19.7 m/s

for the horizontal motion

using equation

D = ut + (1/2)at^2    [for the horizontal motion acceleration a = 0]

95 = 28.1*t

t = 3.38 sec [Answer of 2]

vertical distance covered in 3.38 secs

D = 19.7*3.38 - (1/2)*9.8*(3.38)^2 = 10.6 m

height of wall = 10.6 + 1 = 11.6 m
