Question

A ball of mass

m = 1.90 kg

is released from rest at a height

h = 66.0 cm

above a light vertical spring of force constant k as in Figure [a] shown below. The ball strikes the top of the spring and compresses it a distance

d = 9.40 cm

as in Figure [b] shown below. Neglecting any energy losses during the collision, find the following.

(a) Find the speed of the ball just as it touches the spring.
  m/s 3.59
(correct)
(b) Find the force constant of the spring.
   31.78
(Incorrect) Your response is off by a multiple of ten. kN/m

Im struggling with part b (not sure what im doing wrong) any help appreciated.

Explanation / Answer

b) Using conservation of energy,

mg(h+d)=0.5kd2

=>k=3177.79 N/m= 3.178 KN/m
