Carnitine has an important role in metabolism. It is needed for the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria. What would happen to someone that has a carnitine deficiency? How would this affect metabolism during the various states (fed, fasting, prolonged fasting)?

Explanation / Answer

Answer:- Carnitine deficiency results from the inability to metabolise the amino acid Carnitine. It is a metabolic state in which Carnitine concentration in plasma and tissues are less the required for the normal function of living organisms.

Carnitine deficiency can cause various kind of disorders.

Carnitine deficiency affect metabolism in rodents fed, a lifelong high fat diet compromised high Carnitine content correspond with the increase skeletal muscles where accumulation of acylcarnitine esters and diminished hepatic expression of Carnitine genes. Reserved Carnitine is present in the muscles of rats and was accompanied by the mitochondrial fuel metabolism, including low rates of fatty acid oxidation.

During fasting , series of changes occur in the body that results in the conservation of protein. Fat stores are being used for the production of ketone and direct oxidation of fat will take place during fasting. For example, in case of dogs the interaction between the plasma and the muscle Carnitine, its acyleasters are available.

During fasting there is a increase in plasma Carnitine level before the changes in muscles. But after 5 or 8 days of the starvation the metabolic rate decreases due to the prolonged fasting.
