Question
The first to the right shows the light intensity intensity on a screen 2.5 m behind an aperture. This intensity corresponds to the fringe pattern created. The aperture is illuminated with light of wavelength 600 nm. Is the aperture a diffraction grating or a double slit? Explain how you know. Draw' a sketch for the aperture you've chosen. Derive equations and state all approximations. If the aperture is a diffraction grating, how many lines/cm does it have? If it is a double slit, what is the spacing between the slits?Explanation / Answer
a) The aperture is a double slit . This is visible by decrease in intensity on either sides .
b) Here, d * sin(theta) = n * lambda
=> d * (x/D) = n * lambda
c) Here, d * (0.025/2.5) = 1 * 600 * 10-9
=> d = 6 * 10-5 m
= 0.06 mm
=> spacing between the slits = 0.06 mm
