Question

A volumetric flask made of Pyrex is calibrated at 20.0 degree C. It is filled to the 100-mL mark with 35.0 degree C acetone. After the flask is filled, the acetone cools and the flask warms so that the combination of acetone and flask reaches a uniform temperature of 32.0 degree C. The combination is then cooled back to 20.0 degree C (a) What is the volume of the acetone when it cools to 20.0 degree C (b) At the temperature of 32.0 degree C: does the level of acetone lie above or below the 100-mL mark on the flask? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

The volume of the Pyrex = V0*(1 + 3**T) = 100*(1 + 3*3.3x10^-5*12) = 107.92ml

The volume of acetone= V0*(1 + *T) = 100*(1 + 1.12x10^-4*12) = 103.96ml

So the reading = 100 + 107.92-103.92 = 104ml
