Question
You are examining the phylogenic relationship of a newly discovered plant species (Species 2). You amplify the RUBISCO barcode and sequence the DNA. After entering your sequence into BOLD the following comparison comes up.
Species 1. ATGCAAATTTGGGCATCCGAATGGTTGCAA
Species 2. ATGCAAAAATTTTGGTACGCCGAATGGTTGCAA
What DNA modifications have occurred in Species 2 that makes it different from Species 1?
Check all that apply. (Please explain how you picked each answer so I can understand how to solve it)
A)Deletion
B)Duplication
C)Inversion
Explanation / Answer
In the inversion, a segment of DNA is reversed end to end. Here inversion is taking place.
species 1 ATGCAAATTTGGGCCCATGAATGGTTGCAA
species 2 ATGCAAAAATTTTGGTACGCCGAATGGTTGCAA
Thus the sequences in bold in species 1 are reversed end to end in species 2.
deletion i am sure cannot happen as deletion means removal of few sequences. Since species 2 is longer than species 1 deletion is not possible also no sequences are shown to be deleted. .I think duplication is possible because AATT sequences is being repeated once. hence inversion and duplication are occurring here.
