Question

Looking at the figure which answer is correct?

(From Lecture #3) The figure shows relationships among major groups of vertebrates Morphology DNA AmphioxuS Lampreys Sharks Ray-finned fishes Coelacanths Lungfishes Amphibians Monotremes Marsupials Placental mammals Turtles Tuatara Lizards Turtles Crocodiles Birds According to the data in the figure, amphibians are an outgroup for both phylogenics the morphological phylogeny docs not largely resemble the DNA sequence phylogeny the position of turtles is consistent, regardless of data used to build the phylogeny. mammals are monophyletic for both phylogenics amphibians are more closcly related to mammals (monotromes, marsupials, and placcntal mammals) than they are to reptiles (tuatara, lizards, snakes, turtles. crocodilcs, and birdsl.

Explanation / Answer

1.Amphibians is not an outgroup . This is because although it is distantly related to mammals and reptiles , it cannot be used to explain the evolutionary relation between the ingroup , that is , within the mammals and the reptiles . So this option is wrong .

2.As we can see from the image , the morpholical phylogenetic tree is very similar to the DNA phylogenetic tree . It only differs at some point , like the two different positions of turtle according to morphological and DNA phylogenesis . So this option is wrong .

3. This option is wrong . We can clearly see that turtles have different positions in the morphological phylogeny of treatment vs the DNA phylogentic tree .

This option is wrong . Monophyletic ,or clade is the group of organisms which contains all the descendants of a common ancestor . Here , we can see that mammals share common ancestor you with reptiles , so a group containing mammals and reptiles will be considered a monophyletic , not just mammals .

This is correct .

We can see , mammals ,amphibians and reptiles share a common ancestor .

But we see that the mammals are put above the reptiles , and more closer to the amphibians . This means that the amphibians are more related to mammals both morphologically and also genetically .
