Question

Scenario

ABC Inc. has noticed a significant lack of sales in a new scented lotion "Blossom." Sales for the "Blossom" body wash are great, but the body lotion is not selling. After a couple of verbal customer complaints and complaints on the company's website, they have decided to go back to the drawing board. There were several complaints, which included skin irritation and fragrance odor, to name a few. The company has hired you as a consultant to help them improve the sales of the "Blossom" scented lotion.

Based on the information provided, you will design an experiment to test the "Blossom" scented lotion using the scientific method. Note that you are just designing an experiment, and you will not actually be conducting this experiment. Your experiment must include the following components:

Observation

Question

Hypothesis

Prediction

Model

Variables

Experimental groups

Control groups

Explanation / Answer

AIM: To test the side effects of the scented body lotion and minimize the side effects, by altering composition.

Observation: Reduced side effects when the new composition is tested, compared to the initial composition.

Hypothesis: On altering the chemical composition and the fragrance odor or perfume of the body lotion, there should be reduction in side effects.

Prediction:

1. Placebo: There should be no or minimum side effects.

2. The Initial composition of scented body lotion: More side effects observed that placebo and altered compositions.

3. The altered or new compositions of scented body lotion: Lesser side effects compared to previous composition. Closer observations and results to placebo group.

Experiment:

Experimental groups:

1. Placebo: Control groups set up, using placebo lotions. The control groups

2. The Initial composition of scented body lotion: The initial composition, that caused side effects and rejection by users, are tested and the effects noted.

3. The altered or new compositions of scented body lotion: The altered compositions are sequentially tested for similar tests are performed.

The altered composition should have minimum side effects, equivalence to the placebo and much reduced values compared to initial composition.

Variables:

The chemicals in a perfumed or scented lotion that might cause side effects are: Ethanol, Acetaldehyde, Acetone, Benzaldehyde, Camphor, Limonene, Toluene, etc.

The compositions of the lotion may be altered by varying the percentage and ratio of these chemicals from the initial composition.

Control groups:

Control groups should exhibit either no reactions, minimal reactions or know set of reactions.

They may include:

Placebo lotions or non-reactant compositions, like distilled water or neutral compositions.

Lotion composition, that has been self-used and monitored for a long period of like 6 months.

Models:

The experimental groups and controlled groups may be tested for reactions like:

1. Scratch test, prick test or puncture test.

2. Intradermal test: The allergen is intradermally injected.

3. Patch test: A patch with the tested product is placed on the skin.
