Motion and Electromotive Force Two parallel metal rods form a plane inclined at 20.0 degree to the horizontal. The upper end of the rods are connected together by a resistor of 126.0 Ohm. The lower end of the rods are held in an electrically insulating block. They are separated horizontally by a distance of 20.0cm There is a uniform magnetic field of 0.100 T directed vertically upward. A metal bar of mass 0.10 g is sliding down the metal rods. What is the maximum speed of the bar? Assume: no frictional loss and that the rods are very long; g = 9.8 m/s^2. 106 m/s

Explanation / Answer

induced emf = e = B*v*L*cos20

induced current = i = e/R

magnetic force acting on the rod = Fb = i*L*B

Fb = B*v*L*cos20*L*B/R

Fb = B^2*v*L*cos20/R

Fb is balanced by Fg = m*g*sin20

Fb= Fg

B^2*v*L*cos20/R = m*g*sin20

v = (m*g*tan20*R)/(B^2*L)

v = (0.1*10^-3*9.8*tan20*126)/(0.1^2*0.2)

v = 22.5 m/s   <------answer
