COMPLEMENTARY DISTRIBUTION: is the mutually exclusive relationship between two different elements of the same kind in which one element is found in one set of environments and the other element is found in a non-intersectory or complementary set of environments.
OVERLAPPING DISTRIBUTION: it occur when the sets of phonetic environments in which two sounds occur are partially or completely identical.
ALLOPHONIC VARIATION: is a set of multiple possible spoken sounds, oe phones or signs use to pronounce a single phoneme in a particular language.
DISTINCTIVE FEATURE: when a feature distinguishes one phenome from another it is considered to be a distinctive feature. In this case, complementary and overlapping distribution accounts for the difference in meaning and are contrasting phenomes.
