Question

Problem 3 20V The LR circuit shown has been disconnected from the battery for a long time. The ideal battery has a voltage of 20 volts, the values of the other circuit elements are L 4 mH, and R R2 5 Ohms. If a current flows in the direction indicated in the figure, it is positive, otherwise negative. a.) Find the current In through resistor R1, and current l2 through resistor R2 just after the switch is closed. b.) A long time later, the switch is opened again. What are the currents I1 and I2 just after the switch is opened? c.) sketch the amplitude of the current through the inductor versus time. You may label the time axis in units of time constant, so, T, 2T, etc instead of with numerical values.

Explanation / Answer

At the begining the inductor acts like a wire so:

I1 = 20/5 = 1A

I2 = 0

- When the sweith is open:

I1=I2 = 20/(5 + 5) = 2 A
