Question

If a chest x ray delivers 0.23mSv to 4.5kg of tissue, how many total joules of energy does this tissue receive?

Natural radiation and cosmic rays deliver about 0.10mSv/year at sea level. Assuming an RBE of 1, how many rem is this dose?

Natural radiation and cosmic rays deliver about 0.10mSv/year at sea level. Assuming an RBE of 1, how many rads is this dose?

Natural radiation and cosmic rays deliver about 0.10mSv/year at sea level. Assuming an RBE of 1, how many joules of energy does a 80kg person receive in a year?

How many chest x rays like the one in part A would it take to deliver the same total amount of energy to a 80kg person as she receives from natural radiation in a year at sea level, as described in part D?

Explanation / Answer

1Sv =1J/Kg and 1mSv = 10^-3 J/Kg

0.23 mSv is equal to = 0.23 x 10^-3 J/Kg

So, Energy received bby tissue = 4.5 x 0.23 x 10^-3 J = 1.035 x 10^-3 J

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 Sv = 100 REM

0.1mSv = 100 x 0.1 x 10^-3 REM

So Answer = 0.01 REM / year

----------------------------------------

Dose in REM = RBE x Dose in Rads

Rads = 0.01/1 = 0.01 Rads

-------------------------------------

Enenrgy received in One year = 0.10 x 10^-3 x 80 = 8 x 10^-3 J

-----------------------

No. of chest X-rays = 8/ 1.035 = 7.73 x-rays
