Question
A 200 kg cart moving 5 m/s to the right collides with a 150 kg cart moving to the left at 4 m/s. After the collision, the
carts stick together. a) find the velocity with which the carts move off after the collision (speed and direction). b)
Show, using a calculation, whether or not the collision is elastic (you may NOT assume the answer. You must show it
with a calculation). c) Discuss whether or not your answers to parts a and b are reasonable. Give specific reasons why
or why not you think they are reasonable.
Explanation / Answer
a.
Use the law of conservation of momentum to find the final velocity.
v= m1u1-m2u2/m1+m2
= 200*5-150*2/200+150
= 2 m/s
B.
We have the relation
e= -(v-v)/u2-u1 =0
So the collision is inelastic collision
C.
Mass of the first cart is greater than the cart 2
So there is a chance to both are moving to the right after ccollision, hence the results are reasonable
