Question

A car misses a turn, sinks into a shallow lake, coming to rest on its side with the door horizontal and at a depth of 5.3 m. If the area of the car door is 0.57 m2.

A) what is the force exerted on the outside of the door by the water? Note: 1 atm = 101 kPa.

B) What is the force exerted on the inside of the door by the air, assuming the inside of the car is at atmospheric pressure?

C) Find the initial downward acceleration a of an iron ball of density p =8.60 g/cm3 when submerged in water and released from rest. (Use pwater = 1000 kg/m3).

I need the correct answer in order to give full rating.

Explanation / Answer

A) Pressure inside water, P = Po + rho*g*h

= 1.01*10^5 + 1000*9.8*5.3

= 152940 pa

so, Force exrted by water on the door, F = P*A

= 152940*0.57

= 87175.8 N <<<<<<<<-------------Answer

b) Pressure inside car = Po = 1.01*10^5 pa

Force exrted by air on the door, F = Po*A

= 1.01*10^5*0.57

= 57570 N <<<<<<<<-------------Answer

c) Fnet = m*g - B

m*a = m*g - rho_water*V*g

rho_Iron*V*a = rho_iron*V*g - rho_water*V*g

a = g - g*(rho_water/rho_iron)

= 9.8 - 9.8*(1000/8600)

= 8.66 m/s^2 <<<<<<<<-------------Answer
