Consider a portion of a cell membrane that has a thickness of 7.50 nm and 2.0
Consider a portion of a cell membrane that has a thickness of 7.50 nm and 2.0 mu m? 2.0 mu m in area. A measurement of the potential difference across the inner and outer surfaces of the membrane gives a reading of 80.3 mV. The resistivity of the membrane material is 1.30 (a) Determine the amount of current that flows through this portion of the membrane. A (b) By what factor does the current change if the side dimensions of the membrane portion is halved? The other values do not change. decrease by a factor of 4decrease by a factor of 8 decrease by a factor of 2increase by a factor of 2increase by a factor of 4Explanation / Answer
L = 7.5 nm = 7.5 x 10^-9 m
A = 2 x 2 x 10^-12 m^2 = 4 x 10^-12 m^2
Resistivity= 1.30 x 107 Ohm-m
R = resistivity x length / Area
= 1.30 x 107 * 7.5 x 10^-9 / 4 x 10^-12
= 2.4375 x 10^10 Ohm
Current, I = V/R
I = 80.3 x 10^-3 / 2.4375 x 10^10
= 3.294 x 10^-12 A
b) then A' = A/4
R' = 4R
I' = I / 4
decrease by a factor of 4
