Question
Most gasoline engines in today's automobiles are belt driven. This means that the crankshaft, a rod which rotates and drives the pistons, is timed to the camshaft, the mechanism which actuates the valves, by means of a belt. Starting from rest, assume it takes t = 0.0980 s for a crankshaft with a radius of r1 = 5.25 cm to reach 1750 rpm. If the belt doesn't stretch or slip, calculate the angular acceleration, 2, of the larger camshaft, which has a radius of r2 = 10.5 cm, during this time period.
Explanation / Answer
here ,
for the smaller shaft ,
as alpha1 = (wf - wi)/t
alpha1 = (1750 * 2 pi/60)/0.0980
alpha1 = 1869.6 rad/s^2
Now , as the tangential acceleration of both cranks will be same
alpha1 * r1 = alpha2 * r2
1869.6 * 5.25 = alpha2 * 10.5
alpha2 = 934.8 rad/s^2
the angular acceleration of larger crank is 934.8 rad/s^2
