Question 1 (20 pts) This question is in part based on your Readings "Organelle Size" and "Size & Shape Throughout the semester we explored, directly and indirectly, the relationship between the size ofa structure and its surface area. Please compare and contrast the function and needs of three (3) different epithelial tissues (you pick them) and for each explain how cell size, epithelial thickness and surface size differ and how these differences relate to the functioning of these various epitheliums. You can use the two Readings mentioned in the title of this question to help you guide your answer - which should be formulated in an essay and not in a bulleted list. Feel free to reference your reading assignment and other sources but avoid extensive quotes -they are bad style and will not be considered part of "your" answer -paraphrase and cite instead (see your Plagiarism Exercise to see the difference between quoting and paraphrasing).

Explanation / Answer

Epithelial tissue, the type of tissue that lines the surfaces and cavities of your body's organs, is no different.

columnar cells, which means 'column-like cells';

cuboidal cells, which are cube-like cells;

squamous cells, which are flattened and scale-like cells.

Simple Columnar Epithelial found in Stomach lining, Large & Small intestine, Lining digestive glands (ex. gallbladder)

Stratified Columnar Epithelial cells present in Male Reproductive Trac

Simple Cuboidal Epithelial present in Glands- sweat, sebaceous

Functions of epithelial cells include secretion, selective absorption, protection, transcellular transport, and sensing.
