Question
A scuba diver training in a pool looks at his instructor as shown.
(a)
The angle between the ray in the water and the perpendicular to the water surface is 14.9 º. Use n = 1.333 for water. What angle does the ray in air from the instructor’s face make with the perpendicular to the water surface at the point where the ray enters?
(b)
Find the height of the instructor’s head above the water.
m ( ± 0.01 m)
(c)
Find the apparent depth of the diver’s head below water as seen by the instructor.
m ( ± 0.01 m)
Explanation / Answer
Apply snells law betwen the air and water indices
sini nw = na sin r
sin(14.2) * 1.33 =1* sin r
r = 19.04 degree
(b)
from the diagram
tan theta = h/ 2.0 m
h = 2.0 m tan 14.9
=0.53 m
(c)
apparent depth is
h' = h na/ nw
=2.0 ( 1/1.33)
=1.5 m
