Question

The pattern of sound waves emitted by a source is shown in the picture below. The source is the small dot at the instant shown in the picture, the source is located on at

x = 1 m, y = 0.

At rest, the source emits a frequency of f. The speed of sound is 330 m/s. The small black rectangle in the picture represents an observer.

(b) Using the information shown in the picture, determine the velocity of the source. (The positive direction is to the right. Indicate the direction with the sign of your answer.)

Assume, for the remaining parts of this problem, that the observer is at rest, and that the source's velocity remains constant at the value you calculated above.

(c) When the source travels toward the observer, what is the frequency of the waves observed by the observer, in terms of f?

(d) When the source passes the observer, and then keeps moving so that it travels away from the observer, what is the frequency of the waves observed by the observer, in terms of f?

Explanation / Answer

b)

v = 2 * 330 / 5 = 132 m/s

c)

1.67f * vs = -0.4v thus f = v / 0.6v

d)

0.714 f * vs = 0.4v thus f = v / 1.4v
