Explanation / Answer

It is a fungal infection caused by fungus mostly the Candida sp, when there is excessive growth of the fungi in the vag ina. Candida is found in body in places such as mouth, gut, vagi na and sometimes even in the throat. It is one of the most common type of yeast infection. Most of the time they grow harmlessly in the body but when favorable condition is presented, they grow rapidly causing infection. It is estimated that about 70-75% of the world’s population of women have at least experienced this once. It is referred as vaginal Candidiasis.

It is not a sexually characterized disease, but it may occur to a person who is sexually active. It is more common in diabetic patient.

CAUSATIVE AGENT:

It is caused by the fungi Candida, mostly by Candida albicans. It is present in the vagina, but its growth is controlled by the presence of Lactobacillus which maintains the pH of the area. But, if there is a change in the acidic condition (<4.5 pH) of the vagina, then it leads to overgrowth of this organism leading to the infection. They are considered normal and not serious but if it occurs multiple times, it is considered as the serious complication, especially if it is not treated.
