Candidal Vaginitis

Candidal Vaginitis is a vaginal infection with Candida species, ususally C.albicans. Most fungal vaginitis is caused by C. albicans,which colonizes 15 to 20% of non pregnant and 20 to 40% of pregnant women.

Risk factors innclude:

Diabetes

Use of broad spectrum antibiotics

Pregnancy

Costrictive non porous undergarments

Use of Intrauterine device

- Candida albicans , a dimorphic fungal organism of the gastro intestinal and reproductive tracts is the causative agent of this disease.

Most people have some level of candida albicans in their intestines, and usually it coexists peacefully with the other bacteria and yeasts that live there. But a combination of factors can lead to the candida albican's population getting out of control , estabilishing fast growing colonies and starting to dominate the gut.

It begins to affect digestion, weakning the immune system and even damage the intestinal wall , allowing its toxic byproducts to enter the blood stream and spread throughout the body.

As they spread, these toxic byproducts cause damage to the body tissues and organs. The mahor waste product of yeast cell activity is acetaldehyde , a poisnous neurotoxin that promotes free radical activity in the body

Symptoms and Signs

Vaginal burning and irritation, thick white, cootage cheese like vaginal discharge that adheres to the vaginal walls. Symptoms and sigh=ns increase the week before menses . Erythema, edema, excoriation are common.

Diagnosis

- Vagianl pH and wet mount

Vaginal pH is less than 4.5; budding yeast , pseudohyphae, or mycelia are visible on wet mount , specially with pottasium hydroxide (KOH) . If symptoms suggest candidal vaginitis but signs are absent and microscopy does not detect fungal elements , fungal culture is done.

Women with frequent recurrences require culture to confirm the diagnosis and to rule out non-albicand Candida
