Question

Be careful to keep a lot of significant figures for all of your answers!

R1 = 3

R2 = 5

R3 = 11

R4 = 8

V = 4 V

a) What is the current through the resistor, R1 in the above circuit?

I = 1.33

Your answer has been judged correct; the exact answer is: 1.33333333333333.

b)What single, equivalent resistor could replace all of the resistors in this circuit?

Rtot =

c) What is the current supplied by the battery?

I =

d)What is the current through the resistor, R2?

I =

I understand how to do a. Can you please help me with b-d? Thanks in advance!

Explanation / Answer

(b)
Calculating Equivalent Resistance -
R2 & R4 are in parallel
R24 = R2*R4 / (R2 + R4)
R24 = 5*8 / (5+8)
R24 = 3.08

R24 Is in series with R3
R234 = 3.08 + 11 = 14.08

R234 is in parallel with R1
Req = R1 * R234 / (R1 + R234)
Req = 3 * 14.08 / (3 + 14.08)
Req = 2.47

Rtot = 2.47

(c)
Current supplied by the batter I ,
I = V/ Rtot
I = 4/2.47
I =  1.62 Amp
Current supplied by the battery , I = 1.62 A

(d)
Current in R3 = 1.62 - 1.33 = 0.29 A

I2 * R2 = I4 * R4
I2 * 5 = I4 * 8

I2 + I4 = 0.29 A

Using Above 2 eq -
I2 = 0.178 Amp
Current through the resistor, R2 , I2 = 0.178 A
